Ian Richards  Independent Chair of the Trustee Board - Next Pension Plan

Ian is currently an independent Chair of the Trustee Board of the Next Pension Plan, a position he has held for the last 9 years. The Next Plan has a closed to new entrants DB section that is fully funded on a technical provisions basis but is starting to move to a negative cash flow position. The trustees are starting to consider what investment strategy is most appropriate for the future. He has a wealth of over 40 years DB and DC pensions and investment experience, both retail and institutional. He retired from Legal & General Investment Management in 2009, having joined 15 years earlier to help develop their index tracking business.  During that time he gained a good understanding and practical experience of working with trustees and their advisers to determine appropriate strategies for growth and de-risking portfolios (ranging from the better use of bonds through to LDI and buy-out). Prior to retirement, as Head of DC Strategy and Governance, he was responsible for developing a strategy to cope with changes likely to be needed by trustees to cope with the emerging pensions landscape where they are likely to be responsible for declining DB and growing DC schemes. Ian is a regular speaker at pensions conferences and is responsible for writing the Trustee View comments on the EPFIF website’s meetings blog for the UK Pension Fund Investment Forum and the Money Purchase Investment Forum.
