SPS Virtual:
LGPS Investors - ESG, Sustainable & Responsible Investing
November 12, 2020
Purpose
This virtual conference aims to explore a range of both traditional and innovative investment strategies designed to provide a positive societal or environmental impact or to reduce carbon risk. This will include consideration of how ESG, responsible and sustainable requirements can be integrated into the everyday investment management processes of local authority pension funds and their investment pools. We also aim to consider practical issues such as transparency, fees, benchmarks, reporting and how to measure the success and performance of managers and the impact and sustainability of the strategies, as well as investment considerations specific to LGPS investors.

A Decade of Positive Transformation: Through Crises to a Sustainable Future
2020 has reminded us of the vulnerability of humanity and our planet. It has also given added urgency to the need to address discrimination and inequality. We believe the next decade will see an acceleration in the long-term themes that will transform the world into having a sustainable economy, environment and society. Many of these themes will be achieved with the help of ingenious, efficient businesses whose profits will grow in line with demand for their solutions. In his presentation, Peter Michaelis will discuss these issues, themes and investment opportunities for the next 10 years.

The Just Transition - Decarbonisation, Energy Transition & Engagement
The social dimension of the transition to a low carbon future is at times overlooked. RLAM and its parent Royal London Group have a long history as a mutual. Through mutuality principles and under its financial and social inclusion thematic engagement with companies, RLAM has structured an engagement programme around the energy transition focused on the decarbonisation of the energy system as well as the just transition of workforces, communities and consumers.

China's ESG Evolution
Despite being responsible for almost 30% of the world‘s greenhouse emissions, there has been a growing appreciation of ESG investing in China. President Xi recently announced during a UN general assembly that China would aim to become “carbon neutral” before 2060. With awareness of ESG issues increasing considerably across the country, Irmak Surenkok will weigh in on some of the ESG advances we’ve witnessed in China and discuss wider considerations for investors.
