SPS Virtual:
Alternative / Innovative Investing for Pension Funds

September 17, 2020

Purpose

This interactive virtual meeting will seek to help pension funds to review the place of alternative / innovative investment strategies in their portfolios. We will look at a range of leading-edge and alternative strategies, either public or private, seeking to find different ways to address current challenges and to assess their impact on diversifying risks, improving returns and/or funding levels and on meeting specific income requirements.  We will also consider practical issues such as impact of technology and AI, liquidity, fees, hedging, transparency and implementation.

Responsible Investment Strategy in Social/Affordable Housing

  • Impact investing in UK housing (including how to measure and report on those goals);

  • Teaming with local authorities to build sustainable communities to address the need for additional UK housing while providing attractive inflation-linked returns for investors;

  • As a newer area for private markets investing we have found a good deal of investor interest in the space as they look to learn more, particularly as it ticks boxes from both an RI and investment point of view

Gold: a Multifaceted Investment

This presentation will explain why gold’s characteristics make it a suitable and multifaceted investment.

  •  Is it time to swap out some bonds for gold?

  • Why should investors look at gold as an asset class in its own right rather than just a subset of broader commodities?

Post Covid Credit Opportunities?

The credit market have changed dramatically since the Covid crisis began this spring creating a uniquely constructive  investment landscape for distressed and event driven/stressed (Special Situation) investors.  What does the Global Special Situations investment opportunity look like today?  How have EU and US monetary responses changed the investment landscape?  Will the record downgrades and defaults seen in the second quarter continue?  How will the Covid credit opportunity evolve as we continue through the crisis?

Embracing Innovative Investment Strategies

Incorporating innovative and often unfamiliar strategies in portfolios is a highly attractive proposition for pension funds in the current environment. These strategies often require a slightly different approach to incorporating them within strategic investment policy formulation and to implement successfully. We will explore how to navigate some of the most important issues when investing in these strategies.
