Leyland began his career in finance with an international bank in the City as an Economist covering Sub Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Hong Kong and China. He then moved on to the Government Economic Service at the Department of Health as an Economic Adviser to the Secretary of State for Health on the internal market for purchasers and providers before joining the Merseyside Pension Fund initially as a Japanese and Far Eastern Equities Fund Manager in 1997. He was subsequently appointed to the post of Chief Investment Manager with overall responsibility for asset allocation and the Fund’s global portfolio of equities, bonds, private equity and other alternative assets including Infrastructure. Leyland holds a BA (Hons) degree from Leicester University, an MSc (Econ) from Birkbeck, and qualified as a Lawyer at the College of Law Guildford & Chester.
