Paul de Ruijter

Author of Scenario based Strategy and Executive Lecturer

De Ruijter Strategy

Paul de Ruijter (MSc Business Engineering, Twente University) developed his expertise at Shell Group Planning in London, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam, and Global Business Network. Through De Ruijter Strategy, he has contributed to international strategy projects for cities, NGOs, ministries, industry associations, multinationals, and global institutions. Paul is a Distinguished Lecturer in Scenario-Based Strategy at Nyenrode University and the Business School of Lausanne, and he is a renowned speaker at international conferences and seminars. Together with his team at De Ruijter Strategy, he has worked on numerous scenario-based strategy projects, including a global foresight report for the United Nations Environment Programme, “Vision 2020” and subsequent updates for pension fund ABP, “Energy Efficiency in Buildings” and “Biotechnology Scenarios 2000–2050” for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, as well as “Defense Explorations,” “Justice the Day After Tomorrow,” “National Security,” and “The Electronic Citizen” for several Dutch ministries. He also contributed to “Viewing Futures,” “The Future of Financial Transactions,” and “Interest Scenarios” for Rabobank, as well as scenario and visioning projects for cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and various industry associations, including multiple initiatives for the Dutch Maritime Industry. Paul is co-author of books on business opportunities in South Africa (1992), industrial policy in the Netherlands (1999), and scenarios at Rabobank (2004). He has written a chapter in Scenarios for Success (2008) and served as lead author of a handbook on scenarios for the public sector (2004), a book on scenarios and strategy for industry associations (2006), and a strategy handbook (2011), later published as Scenario Based Strategy – Navigate the Future (2014).
