Charles Tan is co-chief investment officer (CIO) of Global Fixed Income, senior vice president and senior portfolio manager for American Century Investments, a premier investment manager headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. He is based in the company’s New York office.
As co-CIO of Global Fixed Income, Charles oversees portfolio management and research for the firm’s fixed income strategies, managed in offices in Santa Clara, California, New York City, and London, England. He serves as co-chair of the Global Fixed Income Investment Committee, which sets investment outlook for the Global Fixed Income group and monitors overall risk management for each fixed income strategies. Along with his CIO responsibilities, Charles is a co-portfolio manager on the firm’s U.S. Core Fixed Income, U.S. Core Plus Fixed Income, U.S. Short Duration Bond, U.S. Corporate Plus Fixed Income, U.S. High Yield Corporate Bond, Multi-Sector Credit Income, Short Duration Multi-Sector Credit Income, and U.S. Balanced – Core-60/40 strategies. He also serves as a member of the firm’s Investment Oversight and Asset Allocation Committees.
Charles joined the firm in 2018 from Aberdeen Standard Investments, where he was previously head of North American Fixed Income, responsible for leading the U.S. fixed income business. In that role, he also served as lead portfolio manager for their U.S. Corporate, U.S. Credit, and U.S. Long Duration Corporate strategies and was a member of the firm’s U.S. Executive Management and U.S. Investment Management committees. Previously, he was head of U.S. credit, senior portfolio manager and senior research analyst. Prior to that, Charles was vice president at Moody’s Investors Service where he held roles as senior high yield analyst and senior Asian bank analyst and served as a member of Moody’s Insolvency & Bankruptcy Committee. He started in the industry as a credit officer with First Commercial Bank of Philadelphia. He has worked in the investment industry since 1994.
Charles holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China, and a master’s degree in business administration from Bucknell University.
