Shareholder Litigation as Part of Pension Funds’ Toolkit for Advancing Corporate Governance and Sustainability in their Investments

In the U.S., shareholder litigation has increasingly become part of the “toolkit” available to pension funds as a mechanism to advance proper corporate governance and sustainability in the companies they invest in. While shareholder suits remain a powerful means to recover for corporate fraud, they also are a tool by which funds can monitor their investment portfolio to ensure it is aligned with their broader goals as fiduciaries. This interactive session will explore these themes through discussion of recent examples and hypotheticals.

How Emerging Markets can help pension schemes meet their sustainability objectives

A decade ago, Emerging Markets were in the grips of what became known as the ‘taper tantrum’. This time around, an historic pace of developed world tightening has been met with calm in the emerging world, following a decade of improved policy-making. Yet, UK pension allocations remain ultra-low to this bloc representing 80% of the world’s population, three quarters of global land mass, and just 15% of global equity market capitalisation. We ask what other improvements have been occurring, what these countries’ carbon footprint really represents in a globalised economy, and how asset owners can reconcile commitments to sustainability while accessing the growth opportunities on offer in Emerging Markets.

A Renaissance Period for Listed Infrastructure - Enlightenment from the Great Transition

This session will uncover how the green transition is more than just clean energy, but also includes electrification, battery power, and carbon capture and how these will change our lives. These essential innovations bode well for creating multi-decade investment opportunities in listed infrastructure companies allowing them to grow faster and continue to provide capital growth, resilient cash flow and growing dividends, in a world where secular growth is scarce.
